Wayne State College’s Language and Literature Department, the School of Arts and Humanities, and the WSC Press are pleased to hold this Spring’s Plains Writers Series on Thursday, March 3, 2022. The Plains Writers Series is held several times a year to bring attention to the prose and poetry of Great Plains writers through reading and interacting with area audiences.

This Plains Writers Series will feature Kassandra Montag and Lucy Adkins. The reading will begin at 2 p.m. in the lounge on the second floor of the Humanities Building at Wayne State College.

Following the Plains Writers Series will be Poetry Slam 44. The slam will be held at the Max Bar and Grill in downtown Wayne, NE starting at 7:00 p.m., with registration starting at 6:00 p.m. Slam participants need four original poems and a $5 registration fee. ABOUT THE READER:

KASSANDRA MONTAG is an award-winning poet, novelist, and essayist. Her work has appeared in journals and anthologies such as Midwestern Gothic, Nebraska Poetry, Prairie Schooner, and Mystery Weekly Magazine. Her debut novel, After the Flood, has been published in fourteen languages and has been optioned for television. WSC Press published her full-length book of poetry, Chorus of the Underground Sea, in December 2021. She lives in Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband and two sons.

LUCY ADKINS is a writer of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Her poetry has been published in many journals and anthologies, and her chapbooks include One Life Shining: Addie Finch, Farmwife from Pudding House Press, and Two-Toned Dress, which was the winner of the 2019 Blue Light Press Poetry Prize. A Crazy Little Thing (forthcoming from WSC Press) is her first full-length book of poetry. Her fiction has appeared in the South Dakota Review and the Voices from The Plains anthology, and she is co-author of the Essential Writing and Creativity Series, which includes Writing in Community: Say Goodbye to Writer’s Block and Transform Your Life, and The Fire Inside: A Companion for the Creative Life. For over twenty-five years, she has served as a leader of generative writing groups and workshops, and is currently a writing instructor for Larksong Writers Place. Her MFA is from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
