Approaches to Literature: A Practical Handbook for Beginners

Drawing on Gilbert Vaughan’s years of experience teaching literature, Approaches to Literature is written for students taking their first literature courses. The text prepares students to analyze literature by reviewing some basic elements of poetry, fiction, and drama, as well as providing a framework of conventional and modern approaches that students may use to interpret literary works. Two of the best features of Approaches to Literature are the guiding questions that accompany each chapter and the sample essays which apply approaches to specific literary pieces.

Gilbert Vaughan, award-winning Professor of English, taught Language and Literature for thirty-four years at Wayne State College before retiring in 1999. His teaching specialties included Greek drama and epic, the Bible, modern British drama and fiction, and modern fiction of India. A writer himself, Vaughan also supported the Creative Writing program at Wayne State College, financially underwriting the creation of Logan House Press in 1994.
